Clementine Meaning — Origin & Biblical Significance

Clementine is the French feminine diminutive of Clement, from the Latin clemens, 'mild, merciful, gentle.' Clementia was the Roman virtue of a ruler who chose not to use his power to destroy — Julius Caesar built a reputation on it. In Christian hands the word kept the sense of restrained power, which is exactly the sense the New Testament gives it.

The Greek equivalent, epieikēs, appears in Acts 24:4 where Tertullus flatters Felix for his 'clemency,' and in Titus 3:2 and James 3:17, where the wisdom from above is 'gentle, and easy to be intreated.' Philippians 4:5 gives the plainest instruction: 'Let your moderation be known unto all men' — the same word family, meaning a reasonableness that does not insist on the last inch of its rights.

The name's Christian pedigree is real. Clement of Rome, writing around AD 96, produced the earliest Christian document outside the New Testament — 1 Clement, a letter to a divided Corinthian church. Many identify him with the Clement Paul mentions in Philippians 4:3: 'with Clement also, and with other my fellowlabourers, whose names are in the book of life.' Whether or not the identification holds, the name sits at the very beginning of post-apostolic Christian writing.

Clementine has revived strongly in the UK and is climbing in the US, part of the long-vintage wave with Josephine, Beatrice and Wilhelmina. Clem, Clemmie, Emmy and Tine are all in use, and it is one of the rare four-syllable names that shortens comfortably in several directions.
