Sheba
Pronounced SHEE-buh
- Meaning
- "Seven; Oath; Abundance"
- Origin
- Hebrew
Sheba means "seven" or "oath" in Hebrew — both words associated with completeness and covenant. The Queen of Sheba is one of Scripture's most fascinating visitors — a powerful woman who traveled great distances to test Solomon's wisdom. The Queen of Sheba "came to prove him with hard questions" and arrived with "a very great train, with camels that bare spices, and very much gold, and precious stones." After witnessing Solomon's wisdom, wealth, and worship, she was breathless: "The half was not told me: thy wisdom and prosperity exceedeth the fame which I heard." Jesus referenced the Queen of Sheba (calling her "the queen of the south") as a judgment against His own generation: "She came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here." She traveled thousands of miles for human wisdom while Jesus' contemporaries ignored divine wisdom standing before them. Sheba as a kingdom was likely located in modern Yemen or Ethiopia, known for its wealth in gold, spices, and precious stones. The name carries associations of exotic beauty, intellectual curiosity, and the willingness to seek wisdom at any cost.
