Joash
Pronounced JO-ash
- Meaning
- "Fire of the LORD; Given by the LORD"
- Origin
- Hebrew
Joash means "fire of the LORD" or "given by the LORD" in Hebrew. The most famous Joash was the boy king of Judah who was hidden in the temple for six years while his grandmother Athaliah massacred the rest of the royal family. Joash was just an infant when his aunt Jehosheba smuggled him out of Athaliah's murderous purge and hid him with the priest Jehoiada. For six years, the last surviving heir of David's line was secretly raised in the temple — the very house of God becoming a sanctuary for the child who carried the messianic promise. At age seven, Jehoiada revealed Joash and orchestrated a coronation that overthrew Athaliah. Under Jehoiada's mentorship, Joash ruled well — repairing the temple and restoring proper worship. He organized a collection system for temple repairs that was both transparent and effective. However, after Jehoiada's death, Joash fell under the influence of corrupt advisors and even ordered the murder of Jehoiada's son Zechariah, who prophesied against the nation's apostasy. Joash's story illustrates both the transformative power of godly mentorship and the danger of losing it.
Spiritual meaning
Joash — 'fire of the LORD' — was the hidden child who preserved God's promise. His story teaches that God can protect His purposes through a single infant hidden in His house, and that godly mentorship is essential for sustained faithfulness.
