    Meaning
"God sows; God plants; God will scatter"
    Origin
    Hebrew

Jezreel means "God sows" or "God plants" in Hebrew. It was the prophetic name God commanded Hosea to give his first son — a name of both judgment and future hope. As a name of judgment, Jezreel referenced the Valley of Jezreel where Jehu committed his bloody purge of Ahab's house. God declared through Hosea: "I will avenge the blood of Jezreel upon the house of Jehu, and will cause to cease the kingdom of the house of Israel." But Hosea later revealed a stunning reversal. After the names of judgment (Lo-Ruhamah — "no mercy"; Lo-Ammi — "not my people"), God promised restoration: "I will sow her unto me in the earth." The very name that meant "God scatters" was transformed to mean "God sows" — scattering becoming planting, judgment becoming harvest. The Jezreel Valley itself — also called the Valley of Megiddo (Armageddon) — is one of the most fertile and strategically important valleys in the ancient world. Its rich soil made "God sows" a name of agricultural abundance as well as prophetic significance.

    Spiritual meaning

Jezreel — 'God sows' — transforms from a name of judgment to a name of hope. What God scatters in discipline, He replants in mercy. Judgment is never God's final word.

    Questions about biblical name meanings

How do I find the biblical meaning of a name?

Type the name into the search box above. The tool returns the Hebrew, Greek, Aramaic, or Latin root behind the name, its literal meaning, and the King James Version passages where it appears.

Does every name have a biblical meaning?

No. Many modern Christian names never appear in Scripture, and some popular 'biblical meanings' circulating online are inaccurate. Where a name is thematic rather than scriptural, we say so plainly instead of inventing a verse for it.

Which Bible translation do the verses come from?

The King James Version. It is public domain in the United States, so the text can be quoted and shared freely.

How can I tell whether a name is actually in the Bible?

Each result distinguishes a name that appears in the KJV from a later Christian or thematic name. Related verses explain a theme; they are not presented as proof that a modern name occurs in Scripture.
