Eliezer
Pronounced el-ee-EH-zer
- Meaning
- "God is my help; My God is helper"
- Origin
- Hebrew
Eliezer means "God is my help" in Hebrew. The most prominent Eliezer is Abraham's chief servant — "the steward of my house" — who managed Abraham's entire estate and was sent on the crucial mission to find a wife for Isaac. Abraham's trust in Eliezer was extraordinary: he sent this servant on a 500-mile journey to Mesopotamia with ten camels laden with gifts to find a bride from Abraham's own family. Eliezer's prayer at the well — asking God for a specific sign involving water and camels — and its immediate, precise answer through Rebekah is one of Scripture's most beautiful stories of divine guidance. Eliezer's servant-leadership exemplifies faithfulness, wisdom, and total dependence on God. He refused to eat until he had told his errand, presented Abraham's case with integrity, and worshipped God when the mission succeeded. His character so impressed Rebekah's family that they released her to travel to a man they'd never met. Moses also named his second son Eliezer, declaring: "The God of my father was mine help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh."
