Amnon
Pronounced AM-non
- Meaning
- "Faithful; Trustworthy; Nurturing"
- Origin
- Hebrew
Amnon means "faithful" or "trustworthy" in Hebrew — a tragically ironic name for David's firstborn son whose actions set off a chain of devastating consequences in the royal family. Amnon became obsessed with his half-sister Tamar and, following the cunning advice of his cousin Jonadab, feigned illness to lure Tamar to his chambers. He then violated her — and immediately his obsession turned to disgust: "The hatred wherewith he hated her was greater than the love wherewith he had loved her." Tamar's brother Absalom waited two years before taking revenge, having Amnon murdered at a sheep-shearing feast. This act ignited a series of catastrophes: Absalom's exile, his eventual rebellion against David, and the civil war that nearly destroyed David's kingdom. Amnon's name — "faithful" — stands in judgment against everything he did. His story is one of the Bible's starkest warnings about the destructive power of unchecked desire and the devastating ripple effects of sin within families. David's failure to discipline Amnon enabled the tragedy that followed.
Spiritual meaning
Amnon — named 'faithful' but living as a betrayer — warns that the gap between our name and our character is the space where sin does its worst damage. Faithfulness must be lived, not merely labeled.
